Green Paws: Our Volunteer Sustainability Team Making a Difference
Green Paws, our volunteer sustainability team, exemplifies the power of togetherness in driving sustainability efforts. Through their initiatives and events, they not only promote sustainable practices within our company but also inspire associates to adopt these practices in their personal lives. With their commitment and passion, Green Paws is making a significant difference and creating a better, more sustainable future for all.
With nearly 1000 members, Green Paws aims to engage and empower associates to embrace a sustainability mindset at work and in their day-to-day lives. Their goal is to promote responsible and efficient use of natural resources, preserve the environment, and create a positive impact on our workplace, communities, and planet.
One of Green Paws' key initiatives is promoting proper waste sorting practices on our campus. They organize engaging activities like waste sorting games in our lobby and educate employees during campus events. Signage is placed near our Compost, Recycling, and Trash bins to help ensure that everyone is well-informed. Additionally, Green Paws implemented a "Zero Waste Champion" program, motivating team members to adopt eco-friendly practices and complete waste sorting training. These champions act as advocates on their respective floors, spreading awareness and inspiring others to follow suit.
Another noteworthy initiative by Green Paws is the creation of an herb garden on Purina's campus. This garden not only provides fresh herbs for our on-campus chefs, but also symbolizes our commitment to sustainable practices throughout various facets of our business. By growing our own herbs, we reduce transportation and packaging associated with store-bought herbs, minimizing our carbon footprint.
Additionally, Green Paws established a pollinator garden featuring native Missouri plants on campus. This garden enhances our outdoor walking paths for associates to enjoy and provides a habitat for local pollinators, such as bees and butterflies. By supporting these essential creatures, Purina plays a vital role in supporting and maintaining the delicate balance of our ecosystem.
The Checkerboard Exchange is another unique service offered by Green Paws. This initiative encourages associates to participate in a clothing swap for branded apparel. By exchanging gently used clothing items, associates reduce waste and promote a circular economy where resources are reused and recycled, thus minimizing the need for new production.
To engage associates and raise awareness about sustainability, Green Paws hosts various events throughout the year. One such event is the "Trashy Hour," where associates come together after work to clean up waste items in local neighborhoods. This not only keeps the community clean but highlights the importance of proper waste disposal and reduces the negative impact of litter on the environment.
Associates are also invited to attend Lunch and Learns, hosted by Green Paws, where they can learn about sustainability topics from experts in the field. These sessions cover a wide range of subjects, including energy conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable living practices. By providing educational opportunities, Green Paws ensures that associates are well-informed and equipped to make sustainable choices in their personal and professional lives.
