|
Career Tips

At Nestlé Purina, we’re always looking for ways to help our associates advance their skill sets. So, when we heard from individuals that they wanted to work more cross-functionally on various projects, our leadership team created the Data Analytics Rotational Development Program. This unique experience gives Jessica, Brian, and Karina the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, learn more about our business, and think about solutions from a different angle.

What has been the most challenging part of participating in the rotational program? Most exciting?

Jessica: The most challenging and exciting part of the program so far has been the onboarding. Even within the walls of Purina, there is new terminology and processes/procedures to learn. Order Revenue Management (ORM) is quite different from Marketing, so understanding department stakeholders and my role in supporting this group has been so exciting.

Brian: Being able to participate in the rotational program has given me the challenge of making a meaningful impact within each department I've been assigned to for the 12-month duration. However, this challenge is also what makes it exciting for me, as I enjoy the opportunity to discover how my skills can be utilized in different projects.

What is a skill you have learned that you will be able to utilize throughout your entire career?

Jessica: I’ve gained insight into new querying languages, leading to major data processing efficiencies. I’m very excited to have this widely sought-after skill under my belt that will benefit me in my role no matter where I end up in the organization.

Brian: One skill I have learned from this program is working with digital marketing datasets and understanding key performance indicators (KPIs). Given the ever-evolving nature of digital marketing and technology, this knowledge will be invaluable in my future endeavors.

Karina: Adaptability. This rotation will expose me to new roles, and projects, requiring me to quickly adapt to new environments and learn new skills. Adaptability can be valuable in an ever-changing work landscape and will help me navigate different roles and industries throughout my career.

How have you felt supported in your journey throughout the program?

Brian: Throughout my journey in the program, I have felt well-supported by the organization, especially considering that this program is new and focused on analytics. The core group leading the program has established a solid foundation for success, providing me with the necessary guidance and resources.

Karina: My managers and colleagues have been very supportive, providing me with the necessary resources, training, and feedback to excel in this rotation. Regular check-ins with my sponsor in the Sales Hub have allowed me to address any challenges or concerns and receive guidance on how to overcome them.

What piece of advice would you give to someone considering this program?

Jessica: Take the leap! You get the opportunity to gain tremendous knowledge from other areas of the business and grow your skill set along the way to better prepare you for whatever is next in your career.

Karina: It's important to be open-minded, flexible, and willing to take on new challenges. Embracing the opportunity to learn and grow in different roles and departments is key. This is a unique opportunity to dive into Data Analytics and Technology and learn from some of the best.

How has your participation in this program advanced your career goals?

Jessica: I entered this program because I wanted to test the waters to see what is next for me in my career at Purina. I have been in Marketing for my tenure and was ready to try something new. My confidence has increased and given me the opportunity to learn from other experts.  My openness to take on a role in leadership in a department outside of Marketing has increased.

Brian: Participating in this program has significantly advanced my career goals by allowing me to collaborate with like-minded individuals who share a passion for analytics. It has provided me with the chance to learn and grow from others' experiences while also sharing my own knowledge from previous roles.

Karina: Participating in this rotational program can help advance my career goals by providing me with a well-rounded skill set, exposure to different areas of the company, and the opportunity to network with professionals from various departments. This will help me make informed decisions about my long-term career path.

What kind of opportunities for networking and making connections across departments has the program presented?

Jessica: This might be the biggest benefit so far! The amount of people I have met in ORM alone has doubled my previous network within the organization. I recently completed my first big project and was given the opportunity to present to leadership teams. This program has brought opportunities to attend conferences where I have connected with others inside and outside our organization.

Brian: The program has presented numerous opportunities for networking and making connections across departments. It has enabled me to work with unfamiliar departments and engage with leaders across the organization. These interactions have allowed me to discuss my journey and share my vision for the future of analytics at Purina, leveraging the tools we have invested in to drive digital transformation and business success.

Karina: This rotational program has facilitated networking opportunities, allowing me to connect with professionals from various departments and learn from their experiences. Since starting the program, I have attended a Sales Summit and Microsoft Power Platform Conference in Vegas where I have been able to build relationships and gain insights into various areas of the company.
