Purina Scholars Program: Driving Diversity in Veterinary Medicine

Our Purina Scholars Program is a dedicated initiative aimed at promoting diversity and inclusivity within the field of veterinary medicine. By providing support and resources to students who complete the program, we seek to empower future generations of veterinary professionals on their academic journey towards veterinary school. With a specific focus on underrepresented communities, the program addresses the existing gap in pre-vet programs, particularly within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Rodney, former Senior Veterinary Consultant and current Public Relations Lead, highlights the reality of the underrepresentation present in the veterinary field:

“Representation of the Black community in veterinary medicine is alarmingly low. In fact, only 2% of veterinarians in the U.S. are Black,” said Rodney.

“One reason for this underrepresentation is the lack of programs available—particularly among HBCUs for a pre-vet or related undergraduate major, which is a critical steppingstone toward acceptance to veterinary schools. Our goal through the Purina Scholars Program is to introduce and encourage students of color to pursue careers in the pet care field.”

For Purina Scholars students from Harris Stowe, an HBCU located in our hometown of St. Louis, the online format of the program allows them to prepare for the demands of the veterinary field without the need to relocate or commute. Taught by experienced University of Missouri veterinary faculty members, the program offers valuable networking opportunities for Harris Stowe students, as well.

Purina invited Harris Stowe students majoring in biology or similar programs, and with a desire to go to vet school, to apply to become a Purina Scholar. Purina's commitment includes a multi-year donation to cover application fees, books and tuition for Harris Stowe students to complete the University of Missouri’s Online Undergraduate Certificate in Veterinary Sciences program.

Ryan, a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion specialist, speaks to the impact of the Purina Scholars program stating, "Our Purina Scholars are bright, ambitious, and passionate individuals who possess a deep love for animals and a strong desire to contribute to their health and well-being. What sets them apart is their extraordinary drive and determination to pursue a veterinary education through a dual university program.

This level of dedication showcases their unwavering pursuit of knowledge and their readiness to excel in their chosen profession. They are the embodiment of Purina's commitment to driving diversity and inclusivity in veterinary medicine, and we are immensely proud to support them on their educational journey. Through this program, we impact their lives and shape a brighter future for the entire veterinary community."

This partnership between educational institutions paves the way for increased representation and opportunities for students pursuing veterinary medicine, fostering a more inclusive future in veterinary medicine. This program is directly aligned with our initiatives to continue to build a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace for our associates and the communities where we live and work.
